Project Simulation

We are using a blended approach applying both conventional methods and new ways of teaching. The course provides a learning experience that uses a combination of learning techniques by encouraging interaction amongst participants. The project simulation follows the development of a real LNG project. Each case study and activity within the project simulation is based on real LNG projects. During the course participants will use business models to complete economic analysis and scenario testing to simulate events and measure consequences in terms of costs and value.

Course Outline

Module 1: Gas & LNG: What, Where, How Much, Why and Who

  •  Case Study: Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, Qatar, Nigeria and the role of LNG

Module 2: Project Structures, Partnerships and Stakeholder Assessment

  • Case Study:  Exercise deconstructing company annual reports and structured analysis of business models on corporate culture, corporate strategies, market exposure, gas supply and financial performance.

Module 3: LNG Business Models Across the Value Chain

  • Case Study: China and Australia
  • Case Study: US, Caribbean distributed power generation upgrades
  • Case Study: Qatar and Qatar Petroleum expansion trains

Module 4: LNG Overview of Commercial Contracts Across the Value Chain

  • Project Simulation: Structuring commercial terms in an SPA and carry out a MSA negotiation

Module 5: Design Engineering – Feed and EPC Contracts and Risk Considerations

  • Group Discussions: Both technical and non-technical risks that have affected a project your have worked on
  • Project Simulation: Assess the risks involved in the development of an LNG Project using a Risk Matricx and Risk Register and present the methods available for you to mitigate these risks

Module 6: A Strategic Study of the LNG Industry

  • Project Simulation: Develop analysis of geopolitical, commercial and technical factors affecting project development using industry case studies
  • Project Simulation:  Use Risk Matrix,  SWOT Charts, Sector Demand Charts and Cost Stack Analysis in a real strategic industry case study

Module 7: LNG Project Economics, Project Risk Analysis and Risk Management

  • Project Simulation:  Economic analysis and scenario testing to simulate events and measure consequences in terms of cost and value

Module 8: LNG: New Trends in Project Financing

  • Case Study: Cheniere and Ichthys Project
  • Project Simulation:  Two groups with commercial project business developers and bankers. Cases need to be  made for project financing and questioning from bankers to establish whether they are prepared to lend

Module 9: LNG Project Management to FID

  • Project Simulation:  In groups participant will use a number of tools and techniques needed to manage and develop LNG projects to FID

Module 10: From Theory to Practice

  • Case Study: Using the skills and knowledge acquired during the course to analyse real project case studies and make an investment decision
  • Project Simulation: Carry out a SWOT analysis on a number of real LNG Projects both successful and unsuccessful
