Job Description: Manages and conducts both simple and complex projects and pursuits. Activities require independent action and responsible judgment. Leads a group of staff, one or more business units, or development of a market niche. May supervise groups of staff, branch offices, or independent business units so that the operations meet assigned financial goals and Fugro’s professional standards, and are guided by Fugro’s policies and procedures.
Roles And Responsibilities:

  • Manages, directs and executes major projects from a commercial as well as technical perspective.
  • Manages business units or sub-units as assigned.
  • Mentors and trains subordinate professionals.
  • Provides review of proposals and reports.
  • Works independently on most projects, without close supervision.
  • Makes presentations to clients and staff.
  • Typically the “Engineer or Geologist-of-record” on major projects.
  • Ensures that commitments to clients are met for budget, timeliness, and accuracy.
  • Plays a lead role in business development, recruitment, and hiring.
  • May be required to collect fees from client.
  • Personally supports and encourages support for continuous improvement of the company’s processes, including but not limited to the Fugro West, Inc. safety program.
  • Assigns duties to the project team, answers their questions, monitor their progress, and checks accuracy of completed work.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Be a leader in the firm.
  • Set an example consistent with Fugro’s standards.
  • Be a well-rounded engineer or geologist, and be able to provide creative and practical solutions to meet the clients’ needs.
  • Be proficient in project management.
  • Exhibit excellent communication and people skills. Work cooperatively as a full team player with peers, supervisors, and subordinates within the company and throughout the Fugro group.
  • Maintains close relationship with each client throughout development of the project, and after the project is completed.
  • Uphold good management practices.

Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Duties and Responsibilities:
The Fugro HSE Management System relies fully on the principle that HSE is a line management responsibility. Principal Professional’s – Geotechnical are responsible for day-to- day management of HSE within their department and related activities. Principal Professional’s – Geotechnical are responsible to carry out their activities and conform to the Fugro HSE Management System and the Fugro West, Inc., Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
Principal Professional’s – Geotechnical are responsible for:

  • Leading by example.
  • Stimulating employee awareness of HSE.
  • Identifying the required level of staff expertise to ensure safe operations.
  • Stopping any operation that is deemed unsafe.
  • Ensuring that the appropriate process of hazard identification and risk assessment is adopted before beginning a project or any new task.
  • Reporting incidents and accidents, near misses, and hazard observations.
Requirements Knowledge/Skills:

  • A Master’s degree (M.S./M.A.) in Geotechnical Engineering is required; Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) with 10 or more years is preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret contracts and proposal requests, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to present ideas and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to listen with attention.
  • Should have excellent practical knowledge of business financials, commercial terms, statistics, and related mathematical disciplines as appropriate.
  • Excellent problem solving skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions and business/commercial terms in mathematical or diagram form as well as abstract and concrete ideas. Ability to solve abstract problems and resolve conflicts.
  • Individual should possess an excellent understanding and knowledge of geotechnical engineering, geology, the consulting business (including contracts and risk evaluation) and related disciplines. Must be able to efficiently use computers for communication, project management, and technical analysis.
  • Individual must be a team player and have an excellent ability to work in a cooperative environment. Must be able to work effectively with peers, subordinates, and superiors as well as with clients and vendors. Must have an excellent ability to communicate in a professional and direct manner. Individual should have the ability to seek a “win-win” solution.
  • Professional registration in California as an Engineer or Geologist is typically required. Driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record and ability to procure a passport is required.

  • Strong computer skills. Position requires frequent use of personal computer and office- related software such as word processing and spreadsheets, project management and financial software, and the use of presentation software applications.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required, both domestic and international. Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid passport is normally required.
  • Employee must be able to work effectively with Fugro Consultants, Inc. as well as with clients and vendors in coordinating client requirements with Fugro’s capability to satisfactorily complete jobs.
