Job description

We are looking to recruit highly motivated Inspectors to join our Rhineland Refinery near Cologne. We have requirements for both Project inspectors and Unit inspector within our Discipline Engineering function.

The Rhineland Refinery (RR) is one of the “Super sites” in Shell’s Global Manufacturing organization. The total site size has 17 million on per annum crude oil procession capacity with a total of 6000 kEDC (Solomon Equivalent Distillation Capacity). Some 1.500 own staff are being employed in Rhineland.

Rhineland consists of two locations, RR-North and RR-South. Both locations are highly complex, fully integrated oil-chemicals sites, with a “Hydro cracking-Aromatics” configuration. The RR-South also operates a Lower Olefins unit and Oil Gasification complex where raw Methanol is being produced.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensure compliance to German pressure vessel code for manufacturing and operating of pressure equipment (Druckgeraeterichtlinie (Pressure-Equipment-Directive-PED) and Betriebssicherheitsverordnung, AD-2000, EN13445), the regional environmental codes (Wasserhaushaltsgesetz-WHG/VAwS) and various other Shell-directives or internal codes and standards for refinery equipment
  • Work closely together in a team including Operations, Maintenance, Projects, Discipline Engineering and Purchasing
  • Internally within the Inspection department , will work closely with focal points such as Incoming Goods Control, Material Corrosion Engineers, NDT and Welding engineering focal point
  • Planning and execution of all inspection activities for Projects
  • Prepare reports of inspections and tests including recommendations
  • Discuss inspection results with operating personnel
  • Inspect equipment under construction of fabrication in suppliers’ shops
  • Audit external suppliers when deficient product quality is received through incoming good control
  • Special Challenges:

    • Determine the extent of corrosion and other deterioration of such static equipment as pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, storage tanks and similar types of equipment, specifically whether metal thickness and other conditions of the equipment are within the safety and operating limits prescribed by design and governing codes
    • Perform inspections by visual observation, conventional or advanced NDT. Become proficient in the use of other inspection methods, which may be used by the Inspection department
    • Inspect repair work on equipment performed by Contractors in the Refinery and outside at shops and initiate action to correct deficient work. Monitor and approve welding activities, i.e. welding specifications and welders qualification, certificates and performance tests
    • Planning and execution of all inspection activities for Turnarounds
    • Familiar with the risk based inspection methodology

      Requirements:

    • Graduate in Mechanical, Material or Process Engineering
    • EWE (European welding engineer certificate), SK/BP certificate (Sachkundiger / Befaehigte Person) according to the German pressure vessel code and/or an EMUA tank assessor certificate are very beneficial
    • Proven experience in petroleum refining or chemical industry
    • Experience in inspection of equipment
    • Good communication skills to liaise with other disciplines, specialist parties, Customers and the local authorities
    • Fluent in German and working knowledge of English is essential
