Reporting to the Team Lead, Environment, Emergency Response and Security, the Emergency Response and Oil Spill Advisor provides the technical support and coordination of the development and maintenance of regional emergency and oil spill response plans and processes.


  • Support the provision and maintenance of offshore oil spill response equipment, including the management of response contractors
  • Coordinate the Suncor Seabird (rehabilitation) Centre
  • Coordinate the development of East Coast regional emergency response plans, ensure alignment and integration of those plans with corporate policies and ensure the needs of other key stakeholders are met (i.e., local authorities and regulators)
  • Act as a planning advisor for East Coast, and as such, develop, implement, support and instruct management and staff in emergency management techniques including organization and facilitation of training and exercises
  • Maintain emergency response centre and team readiness, including the weekly on call schedule
  • Prepare and revise emergency response and oil spill documentation and procedures
  • Conduct the screening of chemicals in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Support environmental compliance reporting to various regulatory agencies
  • Stay engaged in current and emerging regulatory compliance issues, industry standards and best practices relating to emergency response and oil spill equipment and preparedness

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or Marine Sciences or equivalent is required
  • Five years of related experience in emergency management and oil spill response in the offshore oil and gas industry is required
  • Completion of the Marine Spills Response Operations Course (MSROC) or equivalent is required
  • Understanding of the Incident Command System (ICS) emergency response structure, including completion of ICS 100 and 200 at minimum is required

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the techniques and principles associated with the cleaning and rehabilitation of oiled seabirds
  • Knowledge of the techniques and principles associated with the cleaning and rehabilitation of oiled seabirds
  • Ability to complete technical evaluations of best management practices and technologies for oil spill response and make recommendations for implementation
  • Knowledge of critical incident stress management, emergency notifications and crisis communication would be an asset
  • Excellent presentation, written communication, group facilitation and training skills
  • Knowledge of corporate and regulatory reporting requirements would be an asset
  • Ability to work independently in an environment where priorities change
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary integrated team environment
  • Effective communication capabilities with strong facilitation skills
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to build relationships and manage conflict


  • Position is based onshore in an office environment; however, periodic travel offshore to the Terra Nova FPSO will be required. As a result, the successful candidate will be required to maintain mandatory training and certification for offshore work
  • The incumbent in this position is expected to be on call an average of one time per month (for one week at a time), as needed
