Job description

Reporting to the Superintendent Geosciences, we are seeking a proven Principal Geologist whose purpose will be to provide technical support to the Mine and Exploration Geology team focusing on long-term strategies including Reconciliation and Grade Control strategies and ensuring currency of Grade Control,  Fault and Geotechnical models.

Your key responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Manage the collection, interpretation and release of accurate and timely Geology information to Mine Planning groups, Processing and  regional Planning & Development;
  • Maintaining and improving appropriate Grade and Reconciliation strategies;
  • Actively participate in the development and application of Geometallurgical models and strategies;
  • On-site model updates, including block model wire-framing, grade control model updates, Fault and Geotechnical model updates;
  • Supervise the Database Specialist in developing and maintaining appropriate database management systems;
  • Participate in Resource Model updates as required;
  • Regular collaborative interaction with the regional Planning & Development Resource Geology team
  • Participate in contractor drilling reviews, assist in the preparation of tender documents and be a key stakeholder in the tender evaluation process;
  • Input into the development and planning of both Surface and Underground Exploration & Delineation drilling programmes;
  • Develop and mentor geological staff to ensure professional development and
  • Assist Senior Mine Geologist with higher level Mine Geology tasks.

Desired Skills and Experience

Your degree in Geology will be complimented by extensive Geology experience in varied mining operations, with a strong base metals background desirable.  You will have detailed knowledge of Geological Modelling, Geostatistics, Grade Estimation, Sampling Theory, QAQC and Mine to Mill Reconciliation.  Advanced knowledge of Datamine, Leapfrog and AcQuire or similar packages are required.

You will have the ability to work proactively with, and mentor a small group of professionals and support staff.

You will currently hold or be working towards obtaining your Competent Person (CP) Exploration Results and Minerals Resource certification, hold or work towards a QMS 123 and G2 certification.

You will have advanced computer literacy skills and previous experience in budget preparation and submission.

For this role you need to be action oriented, self-driven, operate independently, and enjoy hard work.


Employment Conditions

An attractive remuneration package, commensurate with your qualifications and experience will apply. This is a FIFO role from Townsville or Brisbane 4 days on 3 days off roster.  BHP Billiton Cannington mine provides resort style onsite accommodation with laundry and meal services, as well as sporting and gym facilities.

To be eligible for this position you must reside within a 200km radius of the Townsville or Brisbane Airport.

A generous relocation package to Townsville is on offer for the right candidate.
