Job Overview

Reporting to the director, eastern product support, you will be responsible for the strategy and execution of all trading operations, including price analysis, inventory management, balancing supply against demand, and coordinating with a broad group of internal stakeholders. You will develop and implement strategies that address the purchase, sale and trading of refined products, intermediate feedstock and biofuels to ensure optimized profitability of our Montreal and Sarnia refining orbits while maintaining uninterrupted product supply for our sales and marketing business and third party supply customers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Balance production between both our Sarnia and Montreal refineries and sales for Eastern Canada for all light oils and intermediates, feedstock and blend components
  • Develop innovative trading strategies and tactics and negotiate contracts with supply partners to optimize profitability
  • Develop and implement strategies to cover customer and refinery needs during supply disruptions
  • Monitor relevant markets in order to react swiftly to unplanned events
  • Operationalize long term supply contracts, such as gasoline import program and vacuum gas oil supply requirements
  • Represent our positions on product supply issues to external stakeholders
  • Execute trading strategies and tactics, incorporating all aspects of risk management
  • Manage marine risk exposures via thorough scenario planning and risk evaluation
  • Manage all Canadian aviation fuels sales by optimizing refining assets, weighing value capture versus alternatives and structuring sales to maximize return
  • Ensure all sales channels are aligned to the downstream strategy and that value is leveraged

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Five or more years of trading or marketing experience, with 10 or more years of oil and gas industry experience
  • Experience working with Eastern Canada, U.S. east coast, U.S. gulf coast, European products markets, pricing fundamentals, supply and demand drivers, logistics systems and tariffs
  • Experience with various physical trading practices and can apply them in complex situations
  • Bachelor degree, preferably in engineering, economics or finance

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to manage any exposure by analyzing and evaluating market risk and developing an execution strategy
  • In-depth understanding of the fundamental economic principles of energy markets, which includes a broad understanding of how macro and micro economics impact commodity pricing
  • Exceptional people skills in order to be an effective negotiator in securing the best deal, while managing long-term business relationships
  • Ability to present business opportunities to senior management, including economic analysis
  • Ability to make strong decisions within tight timeframes, often with limited information

Working Conditions

  • You must be available 24/7 as critical business needs dictate
  • Infrequent travel (5-10 trips per year)
