Job Overview

Are you a mining engineer looking for a great opportunity to join our Fort Hills project? Reporting to the senior mining engineer, technology, you will be responsible for implementation and support of the technology systems and software at Fort Hills, and for the reporting and analytics pertaining to the data generated by the systems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the fleet management, mine wireless and machine guidance systems, to ensure that they are operating efficiently and effectively to maximize their value to the operation
  • Assist with the development of data warehousing and reporting systems to ensure efficient and accurate collection, storage and reporting of data from mining operations
  • Assist in the development and deployment of engineering system processes (planning, reconciliation, etc.) as they are set up for full production at Fort Hills
  • Engage vendors to ensure development of selected programs progress according to Suncor requirements
  • Coordinate with different business units within Suncor to ensure overlapping Fort Hills and base mine systems are aligned where they can provide value to both mines
  • Evaluate new and emerging technology systems and software to assess the practical application and, where applicable, develop the business case for installation at Fort Hills

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • A minimum of five years of experience utilizing technology systems, preferably in a mine operational setting
  • Experience with mine planning and scheduling and database reporting is an asset
  • Bachelor of science degree in mining engineering
  • Professional Engineer designation through APEGA or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with APEGA
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Exposure to fleet management and/or machine guidance systems (such as Modular Mining, Wenco, Carlson Grade, Minestar, etc.), as well as experience with SQL database structure and reporting is an asset
  • High degree of knowledge and competency with computer systems, especially those used in a mining environment
  • Strong administrative and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others at various levels within the company and with external suppliers
  • You continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • The shift is a standard Monday to Friday work week with occasional travel to the Fort Hills site as required
