RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global leading automobile-related manufacturer, seeks a development partner for an innovative speed reducer to substitute conventional ones comprised of simply a pair of gears.

Background

The client of NineSigma has attempted to enhance the energy efficiency in electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles (HV), by employing an energy efficient motor leveraged by a speed reduction mechanism with a high reduction ratio. However, the room for improving the energy efficiency is saturating, simply if today’s speed reducer architecture is continuously improved.

 

Novel speed reduction mechanisms are actively under research and development for applications such as robotics, medical devices, industrial machinery, and electric aviation, where more design freedom is allowed than automotive. Hence, the client has issued this open request to seek a development partner not only from the automotive, but also from other fields.

 

Of interest are speed reducers not just developed for automotive but also for robotics, medical device, etc., technologies originally developed for other functionalities than speed reducers, and any other brand-new design or concept.

 

The client intends to leverage the development efforts with the selected partner(s) toward the automotive application by providing its human resources, equipment, and knowhow etc.

 

Key Success Criteria

Development goal of the speed reducer

  • Capable of achieving both a high reduction ratio and high transmission efficiency
    • Reduction ratio: 30 or more
    • Transmission efficiency: 99.5% or more
  • Can operate at an input torque/speed equivalent to the current speed reducer
    • Maximum input torque: 400 Nm
    • Maximum input speed: 50,000 rpm
  • Bearing units that can operate at both the abovementioned input speed and torque range can be realized in addition to the expected speed reducer

 

Welcomed are proposes who work on radically different speed reducers than conventional ones, and have desires to pursue the goal with the client. Proposals on speed reducers along with bearing units are ideal, but proposals on either speed reducers or bearing units are also welcomed.

 

Possible Approaches

Anticipated approaches include, but are not limited to, the following. Various innovative technologies are also widely welcomed.

  • Speed reduction mechanisms comprising innovative gear transmission
    • Cycloidal speed reducers
  • Speed reduction mechanisms essentially consisting of alternative technologies to conventional gears
    • Friction drive transmission systems
    • Induction-motor gearless speed reducers

Of interest are speed reducers not just developed for automotive but also for robotics, medical device, etc., technologies originally developed for other functionalities than speed reducers, and any other brand-new design or concept.

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidate(s) for collaboration.

 

The client will select the best candidate(s) through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreement(s) (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities. The client will execute necessary agreement(s) with the selected respondent(s) and move to the project execution phase.

 

Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
