Petrofac and TOTAL Pledges over £10,000 to Charities

Petrofac and TOTAL have handed over £10,000 to charitable causes following a successful safety campaign.

Last year saw the Shetland Gas Plant’s project management team pledge to reduce incidents by 30%, as well as achieve zero lifting-related incidents and zero high-potential incidents between September and December 2014. If successful, Petrofac and TOTAL would split £10,000 between four nominated charities.

The team undertook various initiatives to ensure that all efforts were made to achieve these targets, including inviting motivational speaker and Health and Safety ambassador Ken Woodward OBE, who spoke to personnel about a tragic accident at his previous workplace, addressing personal commitment and responsibility for safety.

Staff also ran ongoing housekeeping campaigns to keep the site tidy and reduce slips, trips and falls; meanwhile, the HSSE department rolled out a different Golden Rule of Safety each month.

There has since been a 63.8% decrease in incidents, zero lifting-related incidents and zero high-potential incidents. As a result, Cancer Research UK, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), The Lighthouse Project and The Shetland Isles Riding Centre each received £2,500, having been nominated by the workforce Trade Union representatives.

David East, Petrofac Offshore Projects & Operations HSSE Manager at Laggan-Tormore SGP, said: “Safety is our number one priority but it is essential that we never become complacent. This challenge was extremely well received at site and I am delighted that we accomplished it thanks to a team effort, resulting in much–needed support for each of these worthwhile charities.”

Margaret Muir, TOTAL’s Laggan-Tormore Services Manager, added: “Safety is key to the way we live our lives, whether it be in the work place or in our homes. Initiatives such as these help to keep safety at the forefront of everything we do.

“A 63.8% reduction is fantastic and it is great that these well deserving charities also benefit, thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts from the team to keep the Site safe.”
