TopTech Team Wins Qatar University’s Plant Design Competition

Doha – Qatar – Qatargas sponsored the Best Overall Prize for the 12th Annual Plant Design Competition organized recently by Qatar University’s Chemical Engineering Department.

TopTeCh Team emerged overall winners in the competition contested by a total of eleven teams.  The Projects presented by the teams were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising industry representatives.  Abdulla Radi Al-Hajri, Surveillance Engineering Division Manager, represented Qatargas on the judging panel.

The students presented detailed reports and 25-minute presentations and then took questions from the judging panel. The competition was a culmination of two semesters of work for the students.

Qatargas Ventures Manager, Alae Sadic Al Hassan and Surveillance Engineering Division Manager, Abdulla Radi Al-Hajri presented the prizes to the winning team at a special ceremony held at Qatargas Doha Head Office. Dr. Farid Benyahia, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Qatar University and other faculty members from the University also attended the event.

The winning team presented a proposal for the design of an Ammonia plant. They carried out the feasibility of producing Ammonia in Qatar by establishing the market trends and the markets for such a product. The plant design took into account the national and international standards and any internal or external constraints that are applicable. The team also selected a hybrid technology for the Ammonia plant and took into consideration the environmental impact assessment and emissions reduction aspects.

The award was introduced by Qatargas in 2004 in partnership with Qatar University in order to provide Chemical Engineering students at the university the opportunity to work on a plant design project relevant to industry. Supporting and encouraging education is a core element of Qatargas’ corporate social responsibility initiatives. Qatargas believes that partnerships such as these between universities and industry will help students to become professionals and meet the future needs of industry in the country.
